How effective is IPL photofacial for post-inflammatory erythema?

Short answer
IPL photofacial may lessen persistent red marks after inflammation, although response depends on the vessel pattern, skin tone and whether the original trigger is controlled.

Understanding post-inflammatory redness
Post-inflammatory erythema is residual redness after acne, a rash, a wound or another inflammatory episode. It reflects changes in superficial blood vessels rather than brown pigment. IPL uses light absorbed by blood vessels, so it may be considered when flat redness remains after the active problem has settled.
A fresh breakout, dermatitis flare, infection or broken skin can make treatment less suitable. Red marks can also be confused with pigmentation, scarring or an active lesion, and each may need a different approach. Improvement is often gradual and some marks may fade on their own as inflammation resolves.
Steps before and after IPL
Wait until the underlying inflammation is controlled and tell the clinician what caused the mark, how long it has been present, and whether your skin darkens or scars after minor injuries. Mention recent sun exposure, medicines, active skincare and any history of cold sores or light sensitivity.
Use gentle skincare and protect the area from sunlight after treatment. Do not pick, scrub or apply irritating products while the skin is recovering. Ask whether a small test area is appropriate and how the clinician will distinguish expected temporary redness from a reaction.
When to seek care
Contact the clinic for blistering, increasing pain, crusting, marked swelling or redness that spreads beyond the treated area. Seek medical review if the original rash or acne is worsening, the area becomes warm or tender, or redness is accompanied by drainage or fever.
Questions for your doctor
Is this redness post-inflammatory erythema or another type of mark? Has the cause settled enough for IPL, what improvement is realistic, and which aftercare products should I avoid while the skin heals?

Questions people ask
Can IPL treat red acne marks?
It may help flat, persistent red marks after acne when active acne and irritation are controlled. A clinician should confirm that the mark is vascular redness rather than pigment or scarring.
Can a red mark return after IPL?
It can persist or recur if acne, irritation, rubbing or sun exposure continues. Treating the underlying trigger is part of protecting the result.
