How effective is induction of labour for fetal growth restriction?

Fetal growth restriction means the baby is measuring smaller than expected or is not receiving the support needed for steady growth. Ultrasound measurements, blood-flow Doppler results, fetal heart-rate monitoring, fluid levels, pregnancy stage, and conditions such as high blood pressure help guide the decision.

Induction aims to achieve birth while the baby is being monitored, reducing exposure to a placenta that may be underperforming. It cannot make the baby grow before birth. If monitoring suggests the baby may not tolerate labour, or if induction does not progress safely, caesarean birth may be recommended.

Ask what finding led to the proposed timing, how the baby will be monitored during induction, and what would change the plan. The cervix may need preparation before contractions begin, and the process can take time. Keep appointments for growth scans and Doppler checks, notice your baby’s usual movements, and follow your maternity unit’s instructions about when to attend.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if movements are reduced or changed, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling, or upper abdominal pain. Do not wait for a scheduled scan when these symptoms occur.
