How effective is hormone therapy for endometrial hyperplasia?

Hyperplasia means the lining of the womb has grown too thick. A biopsy checks whether atypical cells are present, because that finding changes management and the need for closer assessment. Progestogen may be given as tablets or through an intrauterine system. It can control the lining, but the response must be checked rather than assumed from symptom improvement.

Treatment choice depends on biopsy findings, bleeding pattern, age, general health and whether pregnancy is desired. Some people need a procedure or surgery instead of, or alongside, hormone treatment.

Confirm whether the biopsy showed atypia and when the next sample or review is due. Tell your clinician about heavy bleeding, fertility plans, clot history and all medicines. Use prescribed treatment consistently and attend follow-up even if bleeding settles. Ask how the device or tablets should be managed if symptoms change.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy enough to make you faint, you develop severe pelvic pain, or you have sudden breathlessness or a painful swollen leg. Arrange prompt review for bleeding after menopause, bleeding that persists despite treatment, or new weakness. Hyperplasia needs assessment because symptoms alone cannot show whether the lining has changed.
