How effective is hormonal coil for perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the period when hormone patterns and menstrual cycles change before menopause. A hormonal coil releases progestogen in the womb, which can thin the womb lining and reduce bleeding. It may be especially useful when heavy periods are the main concern.

It does not usually relieve hot flushes, night sweats, sleep changes or vaginal symptoms by itself. For some people, it can be part of a wider hormone treatment plan because it provides progestogen protection for the womb; the exact plan depends on your medical history and the product used.

Discuss your bleeding pattern, age, pregnancy possibility, migraine history, blood pressure, medicines and previous gynaecological problems before insertion. Irregular spotting may happen during the adjustment period, so ask when your clinician wants to review you.

Keep a record of bleeding and symptoms. New or changing bleeding should not automatically be attributed to perimenopause; your clinician may need to assess it, particularly if it is persistent, heavy or occurs after a long gap without periods. Review the coil's replacement timing with your care team.

Seek urgent advice for very heavy bleeding with weakness or dizziness, severe pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, a positive pregnancy test with pain, or concern that the coil has moved. Contact a clinician about persistent bleeding changes even when symptoms are not severe.
