How effective is a hormonal coil for iron deficiency anaemia?

The coil releases a progestogen inside the womb. This thins the womb lining, so periods may become lighter over time. Spotting or irregular bleeding is common during the adjustment period. It does not replace iron treatment when iron stores are low, and it will not address anaemia caused by blood loss from the stomach, poor absorption, or another condition. Blood tests can show whether haemoglobin and iron stores are improving.

Discuss the cause and pattern of your bleeding with a clinician before choosing a coil. Ask whether you need blood tests, iron replacement, or assessment of the womb. If a coil is placed, record bleeding changes and attend the recommended review. Take prescribed iron as directed; diet alone may not restore depleted stores quickly.

Seek prompt care for bleeding that soaks through protection repeatedly, dizziness, fainting, chest discomfort, or breathlessness. After insertion, urgent assessment is needed for severe pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, or a coil that has moved or cannot be felt when you were advised to check it.

Ask whether heavy periods are the likely source of iron loss, when blood counts should be repeated, how long improvement may take, and which alternatives suit your bleeding pattern, pregnancy plans, and medical history.
