How effective is a hormonal coil for endometrial hyperplasia?

Endometrial hyperplasia means that the womb lining has become thicker than expected. A hormonal coil, also called an intrauterine system, releases progestogen near the lining. This can counter the effect of oestrogen, reduce lining growth and make bleeding more manageable. The suitability of the coil depends on the biopsy type, whether atypical cells are present, symptoms, pregnancy plans and other health factors.

Improvement is judged by bleeding changes and repeat sampling of the lining, not by symptoms alone. Some people need continued treatment or another procedure. When atypical hyperplasia is present, the care plan may be more intensive because of the possibility of an associated or developing cancer.
