How effective is hormonal coil for adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the womb muscle. A hormonal coil releases progestogen inside the womb. This can make the womb lining thinner and may lessen bleeding and cramping over time.

Bleeding can be irregular after insertion, especially at first, and improvement may take time. Some people continue to have pelvic pain because adenomyosis can involve the muscle itself or coexist with another cause of pain. The coil is also a contraceptive, but contraception and symptom treatment are separate goals to discuss.

Before insertion, discuss your bleeding pattern, pain, anaemia symptoms, pregnancy plans and any previous problems with intrauterine contraception. Your clinician will check whether the coil is suitable and explain insertion, expected changes and follow-up.

Keep a simple record of bleeding and pain so you can describe changes accurately. Seek review if symptoms remain disruptive, worsen after an initial improvement or interfere with daily activities. Other options may include medicines, pelvic pain care or a procedure, depending on your goals.

Get urgent medical advice for severe or worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding with dizziness or weakness, fever, unusual discharge, a positive pregnancy test with pain, or concern that the coil has moved. These symptoms can need prompt examination.
