How effective is growth scan for oligohydramnios?

The sonographer assesses fluid pockets using ultrasound and measures the baby's body to estimate growth. The scan can also review the placenta, baby's position and selected blood-flow patterns. Repeated measurements help show whether fluid or growth is changing, although fluid readings can vary with fetal position and technique.

Low fluid can have different explanations, including fluid loss, placental concerns or a problem affecting the baby's urine production. A growth scan may provide clues but cannot establish the cause on its own. Your clinician combines the report with examination, fetal movement history and other monitoring.

Attend follow-up appointments and ask when fluid and growth should be reassessed. Follow the hydration, activity and monitoring advice given by your maternity team, and report any suspected leak rather than waiting for the next scan. Do not rely on a home check to judge fluid levels.

Ask whether fetal heart-rate monitoring or Doppler assessment is needed, and how the findings affect decisions about observation or birth. The scan supports a plan but does not restore fluid itself. Contact your maternity unit immediately if you notice a gush or continuous trickle of fluid, reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions or severe abdominal pain. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, feverish or very unwell, particularly when fluid loss or infection is possible.

Ask how fluid was measured, whether the baby's growth and blood flow are reassuring, and whether a leak or placental issue is suspected. Clarify the next review date, movement advice, warning signs, and what findings would change monitoring or birth planning.
