How effective is GP consultation for inguinal hernia?

Your GP may ask when the groin lump appeared, whether it changes with standing, coughing, or lifting, and whether it can be gently pushed back. They may examine the groin while you stand and cough. The findings can support an inguinal hernia diagnosis, although an ultrasound or another assessment may be needed when the examination is uncertain. Your GP will also check for pain, bowel symptoms, and signs that the swelling is trapped.

Wear comfortable clothing and describe any limits on walking, work, exercise, or lifting. Do not force a painful swelling back into place. If the hernia is mild and manageable, your GP may discuss observation and symptom measures. Persistent discomfort, enlargement, or difficulty with daily activities may lead to a surgical referral. A surgeon can explain whether repair is suitable and what recovery involves.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe groin or abdominal pain, a firm swelling that cannot be pushed back, vomiting, marked tenderness, abdominal bloating, or inability to pass stool or gas. These features can mean the hernia is obstructing or losing its blood supply and need immediate assessment.
