How effective is GP consultation for haemorrhoids?

The GP will ask about bleeding, itching, pain, swelling, bowel habits and how long symptoms have been present. They may examine the area, with your consent, to look for external haemorrhoids or another cause. Advice may include softer stools, adequate fluids, fibre, avoiding straining and limiting time on the toilet. A suitable cream, suppository or other treatment may be discussed, depending on the findings and your health.

Note the colour and amount of any bleeding, whether pain occurs during bowel movements and whether constipation is present. Tell the GP about medicines, especially those affecting bleeding, and any previous bowel problems. Use treatments only as directed and return for review if symptoms persist, recur or change. Do not assume rectal bleeding is haemorrhoids without an assessment, particularly when it is new.

Seek urgent care for heavy or ongoing rectal bleeding, dizziness or fainting, severe anal pain with fever, black stools or severe abdominal pain. These features may need immediate assessment rather than routine haemorrhoid advice.

Ask whether the symptoms fit haemorrhoids, whether an examination or further test is needed, which bowel changes may help and when to arrange a review.
