How effective is GP consultation for giardiasis?

Giardiasis can cause watery or greasy diarrhoea, cramps, bloating, nausea, tiredness, and weight loss. Your GP will ask when symptoms began, whether they come and go, what water or food you have consumed, and whether anyone close to you is unwell. Recent travel, camping, childcare exposure, and swimming can be relevant.

Because several illnesses cause diarrhoea, a stool sample may be needed before treatment or when symptoms persist. The consultation also checks hydration and considers whether another condition or medicine could explain the symptoms.

Bring a clear symptom history and mention recent travel, untreated water, household illness, pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines. Drink suitable fluids in frequent amounts and eat what you can tolerate. Follow any sample-collection instructions carefully so the test can be interpreted properly.

If giardiasis is confirmed or strongly suspected, take prescribed treatment exactly as directed. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing food, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and ask when work, school, swimming, or sexual contact should resume.

Get urgent help for severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek earlier advice for an infant, frail older person, pregnancy, or weakened immune system.

Ask whether a stool test is needed, which fluids and foods are suitable, how treatment should be taken, when symptoms should improve, and what household precautions are needed.
