How effective is GP consultation for gallstones?

Your GP will ask where the pain is, whether it follows meals, how long episodes last, and whether nausea, vomiting, fever, or yellowing of the skin has occurred. They may examine your abdomen and decide whether blood tests or an ultrasound is suitable. These steps help distinguish uncomplicated gallstones from inflammation, a blocked bile duct, or another cause of abdominal pain.

A consultation cannot remove gallstones by itself. Its value is in making the diagnosis clearer, easing symptoms safely, and directing you to a surgeon or hospital team when a procedure or urgent assessment is needed.

Before the appointment, note the timing of pain, foods that seem to trigger it, medicines you take, and any change in urine, stools, appetite, or weight. Tell the GP about previous abdominal problems and pregnancy possibility where relevant.

If symptoms are mild and no complication is suspected, the plan may include monitoring, advice about meals, and follow-up. Repeated attacks can lead to discussion of imaging and referral for treatment. Take prescribed medicine only as directed, and do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else's pain medicine.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever or chills, faintness, new confusion, or yellow skin or eyes. These features can signal infection or blockage and need prompt assessment rather than a routine appointment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gallstones, whether you need an ultrasound or blood tests, which symptoms should take you to urgent care, and whether referral is appropriate if attacks recur.
