How effective is genetic counselling for Lynch syndrome?

Lynch syndrome is an inherited condition involving genes that help repair DNA. Counselling places a personal or family history of bowel, womb and other related cancers in context. It can explain why tumour testing and germline testing are different, and why a result may matter to relatives.

A counsellor discusses the possible findings, including a pathogenic variant, a reassuring result that must be interpreted in context, or a variant whose meaning is not yet clear. This conversation helps you decide what information you want and how it could guide surveillance. It cannot predict a specific cancer or replace clinical examination.

Write down relatives’ cancer diagnoses, ages at diagnosis and whether they are related through your mother’s or father’s side. Take previous genetic or tumour reports to the appointment. Ask whether testing an affected family member first would clarify the family result.

If a Lynch syndrome variant is identified, ask which screening schedule applies to you and how relatives can access independent counselling. Discuss reproductive or family-planning questions privately with the genetics team if they are relevant.

Request genetic counselling when Lynch syndrome is suspected from your family history, tumour testing or a relative’s confirmed result. Do not wait for counselling if you have rectal bleeding, black stools, persistent vomiting or severe abdominal pain; contact a clinician urgently because those symptoms need clinical assessment.

Ask what prompted the referral, which gene or tumour result is relevant, what screening could change, and how relatives can be assessed. Clarify who will explain an uncertain result and when your family history should be updated.
