How effective is fracture fixation surgery for ankle fracture?

The surgeon repositions the broken ankle bones and uses plates, screws or other fixation to keep the joint lined up. This can support bone healing and help the ankle move through a more useful range once healing allows. A complex fracture, dislocation, damaged skin or swelling can make treatment and recovery more demanding. Fixation does not immediately remove swelling or stiffness, and some people continue to have discomfort, weakness or post-traumatic arthritis symptoms.

Follow the weight-bearing plan exactly; putting weight on the ankle too soon can disturb healing. Keep the wound clean and attend imaging and review appointments. Elevate the leg when resting, take prescribed medicines as directed, and begin ankle, calf and balance exercises only when the treating team permits them. Physiotherapy usually progresses from protected movement to strength, walking control and activity-specific work.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, wound drainage, fever, a rapidly tightening cast or new numbness. Seek urgent care for a cold or pale foot, inability to move the toes, severe swelling with escalating pain, chest pain or sudden breathlessness.

Ask which ankle structures are unstable, when you may bear weight, how the hardware will be monitored, and which movement or wound changes should trigger a call.
