How effective is facet joint injection for lumbar spondylosis?

Lumbar spondylosis describes age-related changes in the lower spine. When a facet joint is painful, medicine placed beside it may reduce local irritation and make standing, walking, or rehabilitation easier. The response can also give the clinician clues about whether that joint is contributing to the pain.

Imaging changes do not always match symptoms. Lower-back pain may also come from discs, muscles, the sacroiliac region, or irritated nerves. For that reason, an injection may help one part of the problem without resolving every symptom.

Tell the clinician about weakness, altered sensation, allergies, infection, diabetes, and medicines that affect bleeding. Ask which medicines to take on the day and arrange transport if sedation or reduced sensation is possible.

Note pain, sleep, walking tolerance, and bending before the procedure and during recovery. Use any improvement to practise the exercises and activity changes prescribed by your physiotherapist. Return to heavier lifting gradually rather than testing the back immediately.

Seek urgent medical advice for new or increasing leg weakness, difficulty passing urine, loss of bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs, fever, or a hot and increasingly painful injection site. Emergency symptoms include breathing difficulty, widespread swelling, or collapse.

Ask how lumbar spondylosis was linked to the facet joint, what outcome will be measured, how rehabilitation will fit around the injection, and which option comes next if relief is limited.
