How effective is electrosurgery for dermatosis papulosa nigra?

Dermatosis papulosa nigra, also called DPN or dark facial bumps, consists of small benign growths that often occur on the face and neck. Electrosurgery uses controlled electrical energy to heat and treat a selected bump. The treated tissue forms a small crust and then heals. It can be useful when several visible bumps need attention, but the outcome depends on their size, elevation, location and your tendency to develop darker or lighter marks after skin injury.

The treatment addresses the bumps that are treated; it does not prevent every future DPN from forming. A clinician may choose another technique for very small, flat or deeply positioned lesions, and may test or stage treatment when skin pigmentation or scarring is a concern.
