How effective is diagnostic hysteroscopy for endometrial polyps?

An endometrial polyp is a growth from the lining of the uterus and may be associated with irregular bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or difficulty becoming pregnant. During hysteroscopy, a slender camera passes through the vagina and cervix so the clinician can inspect the uterine cavity rather than relying only on an image from outside.

The clinician can assess the polyp's position, size, surface, and relationship to nearby lining. A diagnostic examination may be followed by a biopsy or removal, depending on the appearance, symptoms, age, pregnancy plans, and other findings. Laboratory examination is needed when tissue is taken.
