How effective is diabetes screening for type 2 diabetes?

A blood glucose test can identify results that are within the expected range, in a prediabetes range or consistent with diabetes when confirmed appropriately. Screening is useful because type 2 diabetes can develop gradually and may not cause obvious symptoms at first. A result is not interpreted in isolation: the clinician considers the test used, whether you were fasting, current illness, medicines and any symptoms.

Ask how to interpret the result and whether repeat testing is needed. If diabetes is confirmed, discuss a plan for glucose monitoring, food, activity, medicines when appropriate, and checks for blood pressure, eyes, kidneys and feet. If the result is normal but risk remains, ask when screening should be reviewed. Bring a list of medicines and mention recent illness because both can affect interpretation.

Arrange medical review for persistent thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, unexplained weight loss or unusual fatigue. Seek urgent help for confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting or difficulty breathing with suspected high glucose. Do not wait for a routine screening appointment when symptoms are sudden or severe.
