How effective is cystoscopy for bladder cancer?

During cystoscopy, a thin camera passes through the urethra into the bladder. The clinician can inspect the lining for abnormal tissue, bleeding or growths and may take a sample or remove a small visible lesion. Cystoscopy is useful because it examines the inside surface directly, including areas that may not be fully characterised by imaging. A normal-looking examination does not replace follow-up when symptoms or previous findings remain concerning, and a sample is examined separately to identify the cell type and depth of any cancer.

Follow the instructions about fluids, medicines and whether local or general anaesthesia is planned. Tell the team about blood thinners, allergies and urinary symptoms. Afterward, drink as advised and follow the appointment plan for results. If a sample was taken, ask when the laboratory report should be discussed and whether another examination is needed.

Mild burning or a small amount of blood can occur briefly after cystoscopy, but contact the care team if pain, bleeding or urinary difficulty is worsening or not settling. Seek urgent help for inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding, fever with chills, severe lower abdominal pain or feeling faint. These symptoms can signal infection, blockage or bleeding that needs prompt assessment.

Ask what was seen, whether a biopsy was taken, when results will be ready, whether the bladder was fully examined, and what follow-up schedule matches your findings.
