How effective is the combined pill for ovarian cysts?

Many ovarian cysts are linked with the normal menstrual cycle and resolve without treatment. The combined pill can suppress ovulation, which may reduce formation of some new functional cysts while it is being used. It does not reliably speed the resolution of a cyst that is already present. Cyst size, appearance on ultrasound, symptoms, age, and whether you have reached menopause guide the follow-up plan.

Not every ovarian cyst is functional. A clinician may recommend observation with repeat imaging, symptom treatment, referral, or surgery depending on the findings. The combined pill should not be started solely to treat a cyst without checking that it is medically suitable for you.

Take the combined pill only as prescribed and tell the clinician about migraine with aura, smoking, high blood pressure, previous blood clots, liver disease, and other medicines. Ask whether the cyst needs repeat imaging and what changes should be reported. Keep track of pelvic pain, bloating, bleeding, and changes in urinary or bowel symptoms. If pregnancy is possible, mention it before any imaging or treatment decision.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, pain with vomiting, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. These symptoms can occur with complications such as twisting or rupture and need prompt assessment. Arrange review for pain or bleeding that persists even if a previous scan showed a simple cyst.

Ask what type of cyst was seen, whether its size or appearance needs monitoring, and whether the pill is being offered for contraception, cycle control, or prevention of new functional cysts. Ask when to repeat imaging and which symptoms require urgent help.
