How effective is colposcopy for HPV infection?

Human papillomavirus can be present without visible changes. Colposcopy focuses on the cervix, using magnification and a solution that can make areas of altered tissue easier to see. If a suspicious area is found, a biopsy can show whether cells are normal, mildly changed, or require treatment. A colposcopy appointment is therefore an assessment, not an HPV treatment.

A positive HPV result does not by itself establish cervical dysplasia or cancer. The appropriate follow-up depends on the HPV result, cervical screening findings, previous results, and the clinician's assessment. A clear examination may still be followed by surveillance when the screening history calls for it.

Keep the appointment and bring details of recent screening results if you have them. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, have unusual bleeding, or take medicines that increase bleeding. Follow any instructions about vaginal products before the examination. If a biopsy is taken, wait for the pathology result and follow the recommended review plan. HPV can clear or persist, so a colposcopy result does not predict exactly what the virus will do next.

After biopsy, contact your clinic about bleeding that is heavy or persistent, increasing pelvic pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or marked weakness. Also arrange a clinical review for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, or unusual discharge rather than waiting for a routine screening appointment.

Ask which HPV or screening finding led to colposcopy, whether a biopsy is planned, when results will be available, and what follow-up is needed if no abnormal cells are seen. Ask how your result affects the timing of your next cervical screening test.
