How effective is colposcopy for cervical dysplasia?

During colposcopy, a clinician uses magnification and solution applied to the cervix to look for areas that need closer assessment. A normal-looking view can be reassuring, but it does not replace follow-up when screening results require it. If an area looks unusual, a small biopsy may be taken. The laboratory examination of that tissue helps distinguish mild cell changes from changes that need treatment. Colposcopy itself does not remove dysplasia or treat cervical cancer.

Results may lead to monitoring, another sample, or a procedure to remove abnormal cells. The next step depends on the appearance, biopsy findings, screening history, age, pregnancy status, and local clinical guidance.

Attend the appointment even if you feel well, because cervical dysplasia often causes no symptoms. Tell the clinic about pregnancy, possible pregnancy, medicines that affect bleeding, and any allergy or sensitivity to solutions used during examination. Follow the instructions about avoiding vaginal products or intercourse before the visit if your clinic gives them. Afterward, mild spotting or cramping can occur; use the clinic's aftercare advice and wait for the pathology result rather than interpreting the visual examination alone.

Contact the clinic if bleeding continues, becomes heavier, or you develop worsening pelvic pain, fever, or an unpleasant-smelling discharge after a biopsy. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether the colposcopy view looked reassuring.

Ask what prompted the referral, whether a biopsy is recommended, when the result should arrive, and which follow-up plan applies if the tissue shows cervical dysplasia. You can also ask how pregnancy or future pregnancy plans affect timing.
