How effective is closed reduction for elbow dislocation?

A clinician guides the elbow back into alignment, usually with pain relief or sedation, and then checks movement, sensation, and blood flow. Imaging helps identify a fracture or a joint position that is not stable after reduction.

The elbow can become stiff quickly, so immobilisation is usually balanced with a planned return to safe movement. The right timing and range of exercises depend on stability and any repaired or injured tissues.

Keep the arm supported as instructed and protect it from lifting, pushing, or a fall until the treating team confirms what is safe. Keep the fingers moving if advised, and monitor colour, warmth, sensation, and movement.

Attend follow-up even if the elbow feels better. A physiotherapist may guide gradual bending and straightening, then strength and functional tasks. Do not force a locked or sharply painful range.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak, or if severe pain and swelling increase suddenly. Return promptly after a new deformity, another injury, or a sudden loss of elbow movement.

Ask whether imaging shows a fracture, how stable the elbow is after reduction, how long support is needed, and which movements your rehabilitation plan should start with.
