How effective is chronic disease review for asthma?

During a review, the clinician may ask about daytime symptoms, night waking, exercise limitation, reliever use, recent flare-ups, and possible triggers. Watching you use an inhaler can reveal technique problems that reduce how much medicine reaches the lungs. The clinician can then reinforce the correct steps or discuss a different device.

The appointment may also update your written asthma action plan, check related conditions such as allergic rhinitis, and review whether treatment still matches your symptoms. A review supports ongoing management; it does not replace urgent care during a severe attack.

Bring every inhaler, spacer, medicine list, and your action plan to the appointment. Note night symptoms, exercise-related breathlessness, missed preventer doses, and how often you use a reliever. Demonstrate your usual inhaler technique honestly so the clinician can correct practical errors.

Take preventer treatment as prescribed and do not change the dose or stop it without advice. If symptoms are changing before the planned review, contact the practice sooner rather than waiting for the appointment.

Use your asthma action plan and seek emergency help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, your lips look blue or grey, or your reliever is not helping as directed. A routine review is not suitable for an acute severe attack.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest good control, whether your inhaler technique is effective, and when to step treatment up or down. Request a clear written action plan covering early warning signs, reliever use, and emergency contacts.
