How effective is child health consultation for croup?

Croup causes swelling around the voice box and windpipe, often after cold symptoms. The clinician listens for a harsh, barking cough and stridor, which is a high-pitched noise when breathing in. They observe the child at rest and while upset, check breathing effort and colour, and ask whether drinking and speaking are affected. A consultation can guide treatment such as a steroid, when appropriate, but the child’s condition can change after the visit.

Keep the child calm because crying can make upper-airway noise and breathing effort worse. Hold them upright, offer fluids in small amounts, and follow the prescribed medicine instructions. Avoid steam, smoke, and forcing the child to lie down. Stay nearby during the night if symptoms have been active, and follow the review plan even if the cough sounds better.

Get urgent help for stridor while the child is resting, struggling to breathe, ribs pulling in, drooling, difficulty swallowing, bluish colour, extreme tiredness, or inability to drink. If the barking cough is accompanied by rapidly worsening breathing, do not wait for a routine appointment. A quiet child who is unusually drowsy can also be seriously unwell.
