How effective is a chest X-ray for chronic cough?

An X-ray may identify pneumonia, scarring, fluid, collapse or other visible changes in the lungs. It can also help decide whether further assessment is needed. Cough can come from asthma, reflux, nasal drainage, smoking, medicines or airway irritation, and these causes may not produce an obvious X-ray finding. The image is therefore one part of an assessment rather than a complete explanation for a persistent cough.

Tell your clinician about smoking or vaping, medicines, heartburn, nasal symptoms, wheeze, mucus and exposure to dust or fumes. Keep track of when the cough occurs and whether it affects sleep or exercise. Depending on the history, follow-up may include breathing tests, a medication review, reflux or nasal treatment, mucus testing or another scan.

Arrange prompt review for a cough with blood, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, worsening breathlessness, chest pain or night sweats. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting or sudden chest pain.

Ask: What did the X-ray show? Could my medicines, reflux, asthma or nasal symptoms be contributing? Do I need breathing tests or another investigation, and what change should prompt earlier review?
