How effective is chemotherapy for upper tract urothelial cancer?

Upper tract urothelial cancer begins in the lining of the renal pelvis or ureter. Chemotherapy may be considered before or after surgery, or when disease has spread beyond the urinary tract. Its purpose may be to lower the chance of cancer returning, shrink disease or relieve symptoms. The likely benefit is weighed against kidney function, hearing, nerve health and other medical conditions.

Doctors follow scans, symptoms, kidney blood tests and sometimes urine or other disease assessments. If the cancer responds, treatment may continue as planned; if it does not or side effects become difficult, the team may discuss a different approach.
