How effective is chemotherapy for small bowel cancer?

Small bowel cancer includes different tumour types, and those types can respond differently to medicines. Chemotherapy may be given to shrink a tumour before surgery, reduce the chance of remaining cancer after surgery, slow disease that has spread, or ease symptoms such as pain or blockage. The team chooses medicines according to the pathology report and scans.

Progress is followed with symptoms, weight and nutrition, examination, blood tests, and imaging. A smaller tumour is one sign of benefit, but stable disease or improved symptoms may also represent a useful treatment effect. If a tumour causes narrowing, the team separately considers ways to keep food moving through the bowel.

Tell your team about abdominal pain, vomiting, bloating, bowel changes, reduced eating, and weight loss. Follow instructions for anti-sickness medicines and fluids, and ask whether a dietitian should help protect nutrition. Bring a complete list of medicines, including supplements, to each review.

Treatment is commonly organised in cycles with checks before the next dose. Ask what the planned endpoint is, how scans will be interpreted, and what alternatives may be considered if the cancer grows or side effects outweigh benefit. Surgery, targeted treatment, or symptom-focused care may be relevant depending on the pathology.

Contact your treatment team urgently for severe or increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, fever or chills, black or bloody stools, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms can signal infection, dehydration, or bowel obstruction.
