How effective is chemotherapy for voice box cancer?

Voice box cancer, also called laryngeal cancer, may be treated with chemotherapy before or during radiotherapy, or as part of treatment for cancer that has spread. Medicines reach cancer cells through the bloodstream, while radiotherapy targets the local tumour. In some situations, shrinking the tumour may help the team plan treatment that preserves laryngeal function; in others, surgery is the safer or more suitable route. Effectiveness is judged by examination, imaging, the ability to swallow and breathe, and whether the cancer is growing or shrinking. The plan balances cancer control with day-to-day function.

Ask for a baseline review of your voice, swallowing, teeth, weight, and breathing before treatment. Report coughing during meals, choking, dehydration, or a change in voice promptly because speech and swallowing support can reduce treatment difficulties. Your team may arrange dietetic, dental, speech-language, and airway support. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and check before using over-the-counter products. Treatment may be delivered in cycles, with assessments between stages.

Seek urgent care for increasing difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, blue lips, inability to swallow saliva, or rapidly worsening neck swelling. Contact the oncology team promptly for fever, shaking chills, uncontrolled vomiting, bleeding, severe dehydration, or a sudden decline in strength. Do not wait for the next appointment if breathing becomes unsafe.
