How effective is chemotherapy for cancer of unknown primary?

Cancer of unknown primary means testing has not located where the cancer began. Doctors use biopsy findings, scans, laboratory tests, and the cancer's pattern of spread to select medicines that may match its behaviour. Treatment may shrink tumours, slow growth, ease symptoms, or make another treatment possible. A response can change over time, so scans and appointments are used to judge whether the plan is helping.

Some cancers with a recognisable pattern respond to treatment aimed at that pattern. When no clear pattern is found, a combination of medicines may be considered, balanced against side effects and the person's priorities.

Ask whether further pathology or molecular testing could clarify the likely cancer type. Before treatment, the team usually reviews medicines, kidney and liver function, blood counts, nutrition, and symptoms. Tell the oncology team about fever, infections, numbness, bowel changes, or previous reactions. Keep a record of symptoms between cycles and discuss fertility, work, family support, and symptom relief early.

Contact the oncology service promptly for a fever, chills, breathing difficulty, new confusion, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, dehydration, unusual bleeding, or rapidly worsening pain. A treatment-related symptom may need same-day assessment even when the cancer itself is not changing.
