How effective is chemotherapy for brain tumour?

A biopsy or operation identifies the tumour type and features that guide treatment. Chemotherapy may be used after surgery, with radiotherapy, for a tumour that has returned, or when surgery is not suitable. The blood–brain barrier can limit how much of some medicines reaches brain tissue, so the oncology team selects treatment carefully.

MRI scans, neurological examinations and your symptoms help show whether treatment is shrinking or controlling the tumour. Headaches, seizures, weakness, speech changes and thinking difficulties can also arise from the tumour or its treatment. Fatigue, nausea, lowered blood counts and infection risk are possible chemotherapy effects.

Ask what the pathology and molecular results mean for your options. Tell the team about seizures, steroids, blood thinners, supplements and changes in balance, speech, vision or memory. Arrange practical support for appointments if treatment affects concentration or energy. Keep a written record of symptoms and ask when the next MRI or review will occur.

Seek urgent help for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than usual, sudden weakness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness or a rapidly worsening headache. Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, chills, unusual bleeding or side effects that prevent drinking or taking prescribed medicines.
