How effective is chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia?

Treatment aims to lower the number of abnormal myeloid cells and restore healthy blood-cell production. An initial course may be followed by additional treatment to reduce residual disease. Some people may be assessed for a stem cell transplant when the expected benefit outweighs its risks. Blood counts, examination of the marrow, and genetic or molecular findings help the team judge response and select the next treatment.

Plan for frequent blood tests and close contact with the haematology team, especially while counts are recovering. Ask about infection precautions, transfusion support, fertility preservation, and medicines for nausea or other side effects before treatment begins. Keep a written list of medicines and temperatures or new symptoms. Treatment may need adjustment if the disease response, blood counts, or general health changes.

Call the treatment team urgently for fever, chills, new cough, breathlessness, bleeding that does not stop, black stools, severe headache, confusion, or marked weakness. Low blood counts can reduce the body's ability to fight infection and form clots, so do not wait for a routine appointment.
