How effective is chemical peel for acanthosis nigricans?

Acanthosis nigricans causes darker, thicker, velvety skin, often in the neck, armpits, groin or other folds. A peel removes or loosens some surface cells and may make roughness or colour contrast less noticeable. It does not by itself correct insulin resistance, medication effects or another trigger behind the skin change.

Irritation can worsen darkening, particularly in skin that marks after inflammation. The choice and strength of the peeling agent, preparation of the skin and aftercare therefore matter. A clinician should confirm the diagnosis before a cosmetic procedure is considered.

Start with a medical assessment rather than scrubbing the folds or applying strong acids at home. Tell the clinician when the darkening began, whether it is spreading, any related symptoms, your medicines, and whether close relatives have similar changes. They may recommend evaluation for an associated metabolic or hormonal issue.

If a peel is appropriate, ask about patch testing, preparation, sun protection and the risk of post-inflammatory darkening. Follow the prescribed cleansing and moisturising plan, and do not pick peeling skin or combine products unless the clinician approves.

Arrange medical review for rapidly developing, widespread or unusually itchy thickening, or for skin changes with unexplained weight change, thirst or other new symptoms. After a peel, contact the clinic for severe burning, blistering, marked swelling, infection signs or darkening that is worsening.
