How effective is cervical screening test for cervical ectropion?

Cervical ectropion happens when cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface. This can make the cervix look red and may cause bleeding after sex or extra discharge, but the appearance is not the same as a screening result. Screening collects cells from the cervix to look for HPV or abnormal cell changes that may need follow-up.

A clinician may recognise ectropion during a pelvic examination. If symptoms are troublesome, they may first consider other causes of bleeding or discharge. A normal screening result does not explain every symptom, while an abnormal result does not prove that ectropion is the cause.

Attend screening when it is due and tell the clinician about bleeding after sex, discharge, pregnancy, contraception and any previous abnormal results. If ectropion has already been seen, ask whether symptoms need observation, testing for another cause, or treatment. Keep follow-up appointments even when the ectropion itself seems harmless, because screening and symptom assessment answer different questions.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for bleeding that is heavy, persistent, occurs after menopause, happens during pregnancy, or comes with pelvic pain, fever or offensive discharge. New bleeding after sex also deserves review rather than being attributed to ectropion without examination.
