How effective is cervical fusion for cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis describes wear-related changes in discs and joints of the neck. Many people have these changes without needing surgery. Fusion may be considered when a particular level causes persistent arm pain, significant neck pain linked to that level, or spinal cord or nerve compression and other care has not provided enough relief. The procedure removes pressure where appropriate and stabilizes the treated segment. It cannot restore every worn disc, and symptoms from muscles, shoulders or other levels may need separate treatment.

Ask your clinician to separate symptoms caused by the identified level from ordinary neck stiffness or another body region. Review posture, work demands, sleep position, medication and physiotherapy options before surgery when clinically suitable. During recovery, follow limits on lifting, driving and neck movement, and increase activity in stages. Rehabilitation can focus on walking, shoulder mobility, posture and conditioning. Keep follow-up visits so healing, symptoms and adjacent levels can be discussed.

Seek urgent care for new weakness, worsening hand coordination, balance difficulty, or new bladder or bowel symptoms. After surgery, contact the team for fever, wound drainage, increasing neck swelling, severe pain, worsening swallowing difficulty or breathing problems. Persistent arm pain, new tingling or reduced grip also warrants review rather than self-directed exercise progression.
