How effective is breast ultrasound for breast cyst?

A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac within breast tissue. On ultrasound, fluid and solid tissue reflect sound differently, so the scan can help characterise a lump that feels smooth, tender, or mobile. It may show a simple fluid-filled cyst, a more complex appearance, or a solid area that needs a different assessment. Ultrasound can describe the finding but cannot by itself explain every breast symptom or guarantee what a complex area represents. The result is considered with your examination and, when needed, other tests.

A simple cyst that is not causing problems may only need observation, according to your clinician's advice. If it is painful or tense, fluid may be removed with a needle, sometimes using ultrasound guidance. A complex or persistent finding may lead to repeat imaging, sampling, or specialist review. Before the scan, mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous breast procedures, and any new change. Keep the report and attend the recommended follow-up, particularly if the lump returns or changes after fluid removal.

Arrange an assessment for a new or persistent breast lump, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a change that remains after your menstrual cycle. These features deserve evaluation; they do not by themselves identify the cause. Seek prompt care for a red, hot, very painful breast, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. After a needle procedure, contact the clinic for worsening redness, drainage, fever, heavy bleeding, or pain that is increasing rather than settling.

Does the scan show a simple cyst, a complex cyst, or solid tissue? Does it need drainage, sampling, or follow-up imaging? What changes should prompt an earlier review if the lump returns?
