How effective is breast ultrasound for breast abscess?

A breast abscess is a pocket of infected fluid in breast tissue. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images and can show whether a painful or swollen area is fluid-filled, solid, or a mixture. It can help identify the collection's position and depth, including when a physical examination cannot show its full extent. Ultrasound does not treat the infection on its own and cannot replace clinical assessment. The findings are interpreted alongside symptoms, examination, and any discharge or sample that may be collected.

If the scan supports an abscess, your clinician may discuss antibiotics, drainage, or both. Ultrasound can help guide a needle or other drainage approach so the collection is reached more accurately. A sample may be sent for testing when advised. Take prescribed medicines as directed and keep follow-up appointments, because an abscess may need reassessment if pain, redness, or swelling continues. Tell the imaging team if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, have allergies, or take medicines that affect bleeding.

Seek prompt medical care for a hot, red, painful breast with swelling, fever, chills, or feeling unwell, particularly when symptoms are worsening. A breast abscess needs timely assessment because infection can spread into nearby tissue. After drainage, contact your clinician for increasing redness, renewed swelling, worsening pain, pus-like drainage, fever, or a wound that is not improving. Urgent help is needed for confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or fainting. These symptoms call for assessment regardless of what an ultrasound may show.
