When breast cancer has spread to bone, the affected areas may become painful or fragile. Bone-strengthening medicine helps slow the process that removes bone, which can reduce the chance of fractures, the need for bone surgery, or other complications involving the skeleton. It may also support comfort and movement.

This therapy supports the bones; it is not a substitute for treatment aimed at breast cancer. Your oncologist may coordinate it with hormone therapy, targeted treatment, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or pain relief, depending on the cancer features and the bones involved.

Share your dental history, jaw symptoms, kidney problems, current medicines, and any planned dental procedure. Good oral care and prompt reporting of mouth or jaw changes help the team manage rare jaw complications. Blood tests may be used to check kidney function and calcium, while scans and symptoms help assess bone stability.

Use prescribed pain relief and follow advice about safe exercise. Do not start calcium or vitamin supplements without checking, particularly if blood calcium has been high.

Tell your cancer team about rapidly worsening bone pain, new pain after a small movement, or difficulty using an arm or leg. Go to urgent care for new back pain with leg weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or bladder or bowel changes, which may signal pressure on the spinal cord.
