How effective is bone density scan for postmenopausal osteoporosis?

Short answer
A bone density scan is useful for measuring bone mineral density and estimating fracture risk, but it cannot diagnose every bone problem by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the scan can show
The scan uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and lower spine. The result is interpreted with your age, menopause history, previous fractures, medicines and other risk factors. It is an assessment tool, not a treatment and not a guarantee that a fracture will or will not occur. A result can support a diagnosis of osteoporosis or identify lower bone density that needs monitoring.
Preparing and following up
Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or have metal that may affect positioning. Wear clothing without bulky metal and follow the centre’s instructions. Afterward, review the report with a clinician who can explain the result in context. Ask about calcium and vitamin D intake, weight-bearing activity, fall prevention, smoking, alcohol and medicines when relevant.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician promptly after a fall that causes new back, hip or wrist pain, inability to bear weight, or a sudden change in posture. An urgent assessment is needed for severe pain with weakness, numbness or loss of bladder or bowel control. Do not wait for a routine scan appointment to discuss a suspected fracture.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which sites will be scanned, how your menopause history changes interpretation, and whether a prior fracture affects the plan. Clarify whether you need repeat imaging, blood tests for other causes of bone loss, or treatment alongside lifestyle measures.

Questions people ask
Does a bone density scan treat osteoporosis?
No. It measures bone density; treatment decisions are made separately using the scan and your overall fracture risk.
Is one scan enough to understand my risk?
The scan is one part of assessment. Fracture history, medicines, falls and other health factors also matter.
