How effective is eyelid surgery for droopy eyelids?

Droopy eyelids may reflect excess upper-eyelid skin, bulging fat, reduced brow support, or weakness of the eyelid-lifting muscle. Blepharoplasty mainly treats excess skin and selected fat; it does not correct every cause of eyelid drooping. An examination may distinguish dermatochalasis from true eyelid muscle weakness or a low brow, because those findings can change the surgical plan.

When the upper-lid skin blocks part of the visual field, removing the appropriate excess can make the area feel more open. Cosmetic improvement may include a smoother crease and less hooding, but healing brings swelling, bruising, temporary asymmetry, and changes in how the lids feel.

An eyelid surgeon should review your vision, dry-eye symptoms, eye pressure, medicines, previous eye procedures, allergies, and brow position. Bring information about blood-thinning medicines and supplements, and follow instructions about pausing or continuing them. Arrange transport and plan time for cold compresses, prescribed drops or ointment, head elevation, and protection from rubbing the eyes.

After surgery, contact the clinic for worsening pain, increasing redness, discharge, fever, or difficulty closing the eye. Seek emergency care for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, marked swelling on one side, heavy bleeding, or a new severe headache with visual symptoms.

Ask whether excess skin, brow position, eyelid muscle function, or fat is driving the hooding, and which changes surgery can realistically make. Discuss the incision plan, dry-eye precautions, recovery milestones, asymmetry, visual-field assessment, and what symptoms need urgent review.
