How effective is antibiotic treatment for diphtheria?

Diphtheria bacteria can produce a toxin that damages tissues, often in the throat. Antibiotics remove the bacteria and reduce spread to other people, but they may not reverse toxin-related injury that has already occurred. Clinicians therefore assess breathing, swallowing, heart function, and nerves as needed.

A person with suspected diphtheria may need isolation and testing, while close contacts may require assessment, preventive treatment, or vaccination advice. Treatment decisions belong in urgent clinical care.

If diphtheria is suspected or confirmed, follow the treating team’s instructions promptly and take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed. Avoid close contact and do not attend work, school, or shared settings until clinicians advise that it is safe.

Tell the care team about breathing difficulty, swallowing problems, allergies, pregnancy, and current medicines. Keep follow-up appointments because complications can appear after the throat symptoms change. Household and other close contacts should seek advice rather than waiting for symptoms.

Seek emergency help for noisy or difficult breathing, inability to swallow saliva, bluish lips, fainting, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Diphtheria is not suitable for home treatment or delayed review.
