How effective are antibiotics for hot tub folliculitis?

Hot tub folliculitis, also called pool or Pseudomonas folliculitis, can appear as itchy or tender red bumps around hair follicles after exposure to contaminated or poorly maintained water. The rash may be self-limited, so antibiotics are not automatically needed. If it persists, spreads, becomes painful, or affects someone with health risks, a clinician can assess whether a water-associated bacterium is likely and select treatment accordingly.

Stop using the suspected hot tub or pool until it has been checked and properly maintained. Shower with clean water, change out of wet swimwear promptly, avoid scratching, and use clean towels that are not shared. Do not start leftover antibiotics because the rash may not need them and the wrong medicine may not target the organism. Arrange an assessment if new bumps continue, pus develops, or discomfort interferes with sleep or activity.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, chills, marked weakness, or lesions that become deep or boil-like. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or swelling near the eye. A clinician should also review a persistent rash, repeated episodes after water exposure, or symptoms in a person with diabetes or reduced immune function.
