How effective is abdominal ultrasound for kidney stones?

The scan images the kidneys and bladder without radiation. It may show a stone directly, enlargement of the drainage system, or changes suggesting that urine is not flowing freely. These findings can support a kidney-stone diagnosis and help clinicians judge whether obstruction is present.

A normal scan does not rule out a stone, particularly one in the ureter. Bowel gas, body position and stone size can limit visibility. Your symptoms, urine testing and kidney blood tests may be considered together; persistent severe pain can require a different imaging study.

Drink and eat according to the imaging centre’s instructions; some scans require a comfortably full bladder. Tell the clinician about flank pain, blood in the urine, fever, urinary difficulty and previous stones. Ask how the result affects pain relief, fluids, follow-up and stone analysis.

Do not delay review because an ultrasound was reassuring if pain continues or new symptoms develop. A clinician may need to check kidney function and whether urine flow is obstructed.

Get urgent medical help for severe flank pain with fever or chills, repeated vomiting, inability to urinate, faintness, or worsening pain with a known single functioning kidney or kidney disease. Infection behind an obstruction can become serious.

Ask whether a stone was seen, whether the kidney is swollen, and whether the ureter was adequately assessed. Clarify whether urine tests, blood tests or further imaging are needed and when to return if pain persists.
