How effective is abdominal ultrasound for inguinal hernia?

A trained operator may examine the groin while you are lying down and during actions such as standing or coughing. This can show tissue moving through a weak area in the abdominal wall. Ultrasound may also help distinguish a hernia from a swollen lymph node, fluid-filled lump or other soft-tissue change.

A hernia that slips back in may not be visible during a single position. A negative scan therefore needs to be considered alongside the location of pain, any bulge, and what happens when you lift, cough or stand.

Tell the sonographer when the bulge appears, whether it disappears when you lie down, and whether you have had previous groin surgery. Wear clothing that allows access to the groin. If the scan is unclear, your clinician may repeat the examination or discuss another imaging method.

Avoid heavy lifting that reliably brings on pain until you have received individual advice. Do not try to force a painful lump back into place. Keep a note of changes in size, tenderness and skin colour.

Seek urgent care if a groin lump becomes suddenly very painful, firm or discoloured, cannot be gently reduced, or is accompanied by vomiting, abdominal swelling or inability to pass stool or gas. These changes can indicate trapped or obstructed tissue.

Ask whether the scan showed a hernia during movement, whether the lump could have another cause, and whether surgical review is needed. Discuss which activities are safe and which symptoms require immediate assessment.
