How does typhoid vaccination work?

Short answer

Typhoid vaccination prepares your immune system to recognise Salmonella Typhi and respond more quickly if exposure occurs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the vaccine helps

The vaccine presents the immune system with a safe form or component related to the typhoid-causing bacteria. This encourages defensive proteins and immune memory without giving you typhoid fever. If Salmonella Typhi is encountered later, the prepared response may limit the infection, but vaccination does not protect against every cause of fever or diarrhoea.

Protection depends on the vaccine used, your vaccination history and the timing of travel or possible exposure. Safe drinking water, thoroughly cooked food, handwashing and careful food choices remain useful because vaccination is one part of prevention.

Plan before exposure

Discuss vaccination with a clinician before travel or another planned exposure, allowing time for the recommended dose to take effect. Share your destination, departure date, age, pregnancy status, allergies and medical conditions. Even after vaccination, drink treated or sealed water, eat food served hot and wash your hands after using the toilet and before eating.

When to seek medical care

Seek medical advice for persistent fever, weakness, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation after travel or possible exposure. Get urgent help for confusion, severe dehydration, fainting, blood in stool or inability to keep fluids down. Do not assume vaccination makes these symptoms harmless.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which vaccine suits your travel plans, when it should be given, whether a repeat dose is advised and what side effects to watch for. Confirm what food and water precautions you should follow and which symptoms should prompt testing or treatment.

Questions people ask

Does typhoid vaccination prevent every travel-related stomach illness?

No. It targets typhoid and does not cover every infection that can cause fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.

Can I stop being careful with food after vaccination?

No. Choose safe water and well-cooked food because vaccination is only one layer of protection.
