How does stoma surgery work?

During the operation, the surgeon selects a healthy section of bowel and guides it through a planned opening in the abdomen. The visible end is called the stoma. An ileostomy uses the end of the small bowel, while a colostomy uses part of the large bowel. The type and position depend on the operation, the disease location and how much bowel needs to rest or be removed.

A stoma does not have the usual muscle control, so output passes when the bowel moves. A skin barrier and pouch collect it and protect the surrounding skin. A stoma may be temporary while an internal join heals, or it may be intended to remain. It can be used during treatment for bowel or rectal cancer, among other surgical situations.

Before and after surgery, a stoma nurse can help mark the site, choose an appliance and practise emptying or changing the pouch. Check the skin each time and report persistent soreness, leakage or a change in the stoma's appearance. Keep a record of output patterns while your team explains hydration, food choices and medicines that may affect bowel function. Do not pull off a barrier roughly, because this can injure the skin.

Get urgent advice if the stoma becomes dark, very pale or cold, stops producing output with cramping or vomiting, or produces heavy bleeding. Contact your team for fever, increasing abdominal pain, swelling, repeated leakage, dehydration symptoms or a wound that is opening. Sudden severe pain or collapse needs emergency care.

Ask which bowel segment will form the stoma, whether it is expected to be temporary, how to protect the skin, what output changes matter, and who to call outside clinic hours.
