How does second opinion work?

Short answer

A second opinion is an independent specialist review of your diagnosis, test results and possible treatment choices.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the review may include

A specialist examines your clinical history, imaging, laboratory results and pathology. If tissue samples are available, another pathologist may review the slides or digital images to confirm the tumour type and features. The reviewer may agree with the first diagnosis, refine it or suggest that more information is needed. They can explain options such as surgery, medicines, radiotherapy, monitoring or a clinical discussion with several specialists. A second opinion does not automatically replace the first doctor’s plan. Its value is helping you understand why a recommendation was made and whether another reasonable approach fits your goals. Complex cases, including metastatic cancer, may benefit from review by a team with relevant experience.

How to arrange one

Ask your treating team or the specialist service what records are needed. Gather scan reports and images, pathology reports, biopsy material if requested, medication lists and a short timeline of your symptoms and treatment. Write down your priorities, such as preserving function or reducing travel. Prepare questions and take a support person if allowed. Ask how the opinion will be shared with your current team so decisions remain coordinated.

When timing matters

Tell your oncology team if a treatment decision feels urgent, if symptoms are rapidly worsening, or if you are unsure whether waiting for a review is safe. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, new weakness, confusion, uncontrolled pain or heavy bleeding. A second opinion should not delay emergency care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what question the review should answer, which records will be sent, whether your pathology can be rechecked, and when you can expect an explanation. Clarify how differing recommendations will be compared and who will coordinate the final plan.

Questions people ask

Will a second opinion always change my treatment?

No. It may confirm the original diagnosis and plan, refine details or identify another suitable option.

Can pathology be reviewed again?

Often, the treating service can arrange review of slides or digital pathology when that would help answer a specific question.
