How does scoliosis bracing work?

Scoliosis bracing uses shaped pressure around the torso to guide spinal growth and limit worsening of a curve. It is usually considered while a child or teenager is still growing, because the brace influences how the spine develops rather than instantly straightening it. The fit, wearing schedule and follow-up images are tailored to the individual curve.

A brace applies pressure to selected areas of the ribs and trunk while leaving room on the opposite side for the body to move away from the curve. This three-dimensional support can reduce the curve while the brace is on and may help limit progression during growth. A custom thermoplastic shell is moulded to the body and adjusted as the child grows. Bracing does not treat every spinal curve, and it does not replace assessment of posture, balance, pain or breathing.

The orthotist checks pressure points, skin and comfort after fitting. Follow the prescribed wearing plan, wear a thin close-fitting layer beneath the shell, and inspect the skin each time the brace is removed. Keep the brace clean and report rubbing, numbness, increasing pain or a shell that feels loose. Exercises may be included to maintain strength and movement, but they should match the clinical plan. Regular appointments allow the brace to be reshaped as growth changes the fit.

Contact the treating team promptly if skin remains sore or broken, the brace causes persistent numbness, or pain becomes new or difficult to control. Seek urgent medical care for sudden leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty or a major injury. These symptoms need assessment rather than a brace adjustment alone.

Ask which part of the curve the brace is intended to influence, how many hours it should be worn, and how growth will be monitored. Clarify which activities are allowed, when the shell needs adjustment, and what skin changes require a call.
