How does sacroiliac joint injection work?

Short answer

A sacroiliac joint injection places medicine near the joint to help assess pain and reduce local inflammation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Target
The sacroiliac joint at the back of the pelvis.
Medicines
Local anaesthetic, corticosteroid, or both.

What the injection does

The sacroiliac joints connect the base of the spine with the pelvis. After skin preparation and local numbing, a clinician guides a needle toward the joint, often with imaging, and injects a small amount of medicine. Local Anaesthetic can temporarily reduce sensation and help show whether the joint is contributing to pain. Corticosteroid may calm inflammation over a longer period.

The injection is used selectively for suspected Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction and is one part of an assessment and treatment plan. Relief, if it occurs, is interpreted alongside your history and examination; it does not by itself explain every cause of lower-back, buttock or leg pain.

Before and after the procedure

Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, diabetes, infection, pregnancy or bleeding problems. Arrange transport if your leg feels numb or weak afterward. Follow instructions about bathing, activity and medicines. Keep notes on pain, movement and any temporary numbness, then discuss the response at follow-up. Gentle activity is often reintroduced according to the treating team’s advice.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, severe or persistent numbness, new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain that becomes markedly worse. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, fainting or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the injection is intended to test or treat, which medicine will be used, how to manage diabetic or blood-thinning medicines, and which symptoms should trigger a call after the procedure.

Questions people ask

Will the injection identify the only cause of my pain?

No. The response can provide useful information, but pain may involve several structures and must be interpreted clinically.

Can I drive home afterward?

Ask the clinic. Temporary numbness or weakness may make driving unsafe, so arrange transport if advised.
