How does PGT-A work?

IVF creates embryos in the laboratory. The embryos are allowed to develop to the blastocyst stage, when cells from the outer layer can be sampled. This biopsy is handled carefully so the embryo can remain in storage while the sample is analysed.

The laboratory examines the sample's chromosome pattern, often using next-generation sequencing. The result may describe an embryo as having a chromosome number expected for the test, an extra or missing chromosome, or a result that needs further discussion. PGT-A does not test for every genetic condition, and it cannot predict every aspect of an embryo's future development.

Your fertility team combines the PGT-A report with embryo development, your medical history, and your preferences when discussing transfer options. Embryos are not selected on the laboratory result alone. Ask what each report category means for your treatment plan and whether confirmatory testing during pregnancy will be offered.

PGT-A is part of an IVF pathway rather than a stand-alone blood test. The surrounding steps can include ovarian stimulation, egg collection, fertilisation, blastocyst culture, biopsy, freezing, and a later embryo transfer.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly after egg collection or embryo transfer if you have heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, breathing difficulty, or a fever. These symptoms relate to treatment or recovery and need clinical assessment; they are not determined by the PGT-A result.

Ask which chromosome findings the laboratory reports, how mosaic or inconclusive results are handled, how long results may take, and what options exist if no embryo is recommended for transfer.
